SUMMARY:Careers in Modernism
DESCRIPTION:“Careers in Modernism” will highlight the work of Will Scribner\, FAIA and Sanford Bond\, FAIA\, architects whose work has enhanced Richmond’s built environment starting in the 1970s. Both Will and Sandy have been awarded the Noland Medal\, the highest honor bestowed by the AIA Virginia\, in recognition of their architectural accomplishments over time\, and celebrating their efforts beyond the expected scope of the profession. \nWill and Sandy both began their careers in Richmond at Glave Newman Anderson (now Glave & Holmes)\, a firm whose projects celebrated modern architecture\, whether in buildings they renovated and expanded or in new construction. Sandy and Will later started their own firms. First Sandy started SB Architects\, later opened BCWH with three partners\, and finally co-founded 3North. In 1992 Will established Scriber Messer Brady & Wade\, now known as SMBW\, with three partners. \nTheir projects have consistently raised the bar of modern design in our city and wherever they have worked. \nOur conversation with Will and Sandy will be moderated by Modern Richmond board members Mimi Sadler and Maggie Schubert. \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Great Minds Tour
DESCRIPTION:On April 21\, 2022 from 5:30-7:30 Modern Richmond will offer a tour and talk at the newly renovated space for Great Minds. Great Minds’ goal is to improve Pre-K through grade 12 education by supporting teachers with knowledge-driven and coherent curriculum materials and services in math\, English\, science\, history and other subjects. \nIn 2020 Great Minds made the decision to relocate from Washington DC to Richmond. The relocation effort was led by founder and CEO\, Lynne Munson. She became enamored with 840 Hermitage Road. A diamond in the rough at the time\, the building embodied authentic craft and purposeful design. Three years later\, Great Minds now occupies its new location as a house of knowledge\, a place of innovation and thought leadership\, and a study of workplace innovation. \nDesigned with a reverence for the historic structure\, the modern intervention is set purposely to invite a creative dialogue. The new architecture is minimal and reserved\, allowing it to be a canvas for artwork and modernist furnishings. Stan\, a full sized 40-foot scientific replica of a T-Rex\, acts as an ambassador of perpetual curiosity and wonder. The space serves a variety of uses from everyday workplace\, leadership and academic team retreats\, media events\, and ultimately\, school group tours. \nSpeakers for this event include: \nLynne Munson – Founder and CEO of Great Minds\nPeter Fraser – Director of Brand Experience at Great Minds\nJessie Gemmer – Architect at Fultz&Singh Architects\nAmrit Singh – Partner at Fultz&Singh Architects\nBrad Sauer – Sauer Properties\nModerated by Helen Reed – Modern Richmond Past Chair+Director of Marketing \nRegister online. \nFree parking is available adjacent to the building\, which is located at 840 Hermitage Road in Sauer Center.

SUMMARY:USGBC Virginia Presents: VCU Engineering Research Building
DESCRIPTION:USGBC Virginia presents a tour of the LEED v2009 Silver Virginia Commonwealth University Engineering Research Building in Richmond! \n\n\n\n\n\nThe College of Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University opened its new LEED Silver Certified Engineering Research Building in February of 2021. The four-story\, 133\,000-square-foot facility significantly expands the college’s laboratory capacity for advanced research. It also supports economic development initiatives and hands-on engineering education. The ERB extends and connects the building shared by VCU Engineering’s East Hall and the VCU School of Business’ Snead Hall. Its fully equipped Collaboration Hub and Innovation Courtyard are designed to knit together the three buildings in an open\, light-filled space. The design also features specialized workspaces. One of the most notable of these is the Innovation Maker Facility\, a makerspace equipped with resources for hands-on prototyping and creative\, experiential learning\, 3D printing\, bench electrical fabrication\, tabletop equipment and hand tools\, industrial-scale mills and lathes and more. \nThe design and project management team will lead a walking tour of the building and its defining features; discussing the vision\, strategies\, and challenges of creating a contemporary\, sustainable\, and resilient engineering research facility for VCU. \nRegister. \nThis tour has been approved for 1 GBCI CE and 1 AIA LU! \nThis event will not accept at-door registrations.

SUMMARY:Architecture Exchange East
DESCRIPTION:Resilience is the sustained ability of communities to withstand\, adapt to\, and recover from adversity. As we continue to emerge from a global pandemic and societal strife\, we ask ourselves: how can we (re) build our communities? \nBeyond new ways of working\, what are the new paradigms for ourselves\, our practices\, our processes\, our communities\, and our clients? How are the design processes and resultant outcomes encompassing social justice and resiliency? \nJoin your colleagues Nov. 2-4\, 2022 in Richmond (or online) at Architecture Exchange East (ArchEx) as we begin our return to normalcy\, collaborate\, and explore how the profession can expand the dialogue and contribute to a growing common understanding. Through the lens of (re)Building Community\, we’ll explore how to: \n\nMake the profession an ever-increasing service\nDevelop design responses and ideas to support our communities\nContribute to healthier communities and the overall well-being of their inhabitants\n\nRegistration is expected to open in early September.

SUMMARY:Taliesin Colloquium 2023: The Evolution of Preservation Standards and Guidelines
DESCRIPTION:Join the AIA National Historic Resources Committee for a colloquium on The Evolution of Preservation Standards and Guidelines sponsored to be held at Frank Lloyd Wright’s historic Taliesin West in Scottsdale\, Arizona on February 3-4. \n\nThis event will inform dialogue on historic district guidelines at the local level\, as well as the state and national level on ways that preservation standards and guidelines can better interact with and complement energy codes and performance standards\, as well as resilience guidelines\, and to foster community equity. \n\nWe must ask if the current policies and standards governing historic preservation continue to be viable as the world is far different than it was when the standards were written.  The current climate crisis has changed codes and regulations and goals toward sustainable building practices.  Equally our understanding of the need for historic preservation to take on a more holistic view of sustainability including social\, cultural and economic equity has intensified and calls for us to look closely as to whether current standards are inclusive or exclusive.  Are the current policies and practices of historic preservation still valid or must they mature to meet the current challenges?  How can we respond to these challenges and prepare for the future?   Do policies and practices need to be open to change? Some say that current Standards provide the required flexibility and that that it is the interpretation that has become too rigid.   Others believe that we need additional standards to address issues of social and economic equity.  This Colloquium will take a deep dive into the global issues that preservationists face today and the Standards and Guidelines that have been the backbone of our practice. \n\nOrganized by: \nAIA National Historic Resources Committee \n  \n\nPrice\n\n$300 for AIA members \n$500 for non-members \nRegistration fee includes breakfast\, lunch\, reception\, sessions\, reception\, and Twilight tour. \n\n\n\nCredits\n\n11.25 HSW|LUs
