SUMMARY:Careers in Modernism
DESCRIPTION:“Careers in Modernism” will highlight the work of Will Scribner\, FAIA and Sanford Bond\, FAIA\, architects whose work has enhanced Richmond’s built environment starting in the 1970s. Both Will and Sandy have been awarded the Noland Medal\, the highest honor bestowed by the AIA Virginia\, in recognition of their architectural accomplishments over time\, and celebrating their efforts beyond the expected scope of the profession. \nWill and Sandy both began their careers in Richmond at Glave Newman Anderson (now Glave & Holmes)\, a firm whose projects celebrated modern architecture\, whether in buildings they renovated and expanded or in new construction. Sandy and Will later started their own firms. First Sandy started SB Architects\, later opened BCWH with three partners\, and finally co-founded 3North. In 1992 Will established Scriber Messer Brady & Wade\, now known as SMBW\, with three partners. \nTheir projects have consistently raised the bar of modern design in our city and wherever they have worked. \nOur conversation with Will and Sandy will be moderated by Modern Richmond board members Mimi Sadler and Maggie Schubert. \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:A Jewel in Appalachia
DESCRIPTION:Join AIA Richmond and AIA Northern Virginia for a jointly held virtual event on the award-winning short film “A Jewel in Appalachia” about the transformation of the Lawrence County Public Library. The film was awarded people’s choice in the 2022 AIA Look Up Film Challenge. You will hear directly from the projects architect and filmmakers from OPN Architects and Library Director Carlie Pelfrey about the importance of this transformative project to eastern Kentucky. \nLouisa is the small-county seat of 2\,327\, in Kentucky’s largest county. It’s a place of scarcity\, where the per capita income $12\,008 and 30% of the population lives below the poverty line. The original 1960s Lawrence County Public Library\, with limited windows and collection space\, high shelves\, hidden and inadequate seating and storage\, could not deliver on the library board and director’s promise to be a beacon for learning in a place where light can struggle to break through poverty’s pervasive darkness. They were committed to a process and a promise for a renovation that would create an epicenter for the county; embrace justice\, equity\, and care; address challenges head on; highlight access and opportunity; and most importantly celebrate the belief that a modern library can thrive anywhere. The renovated library\, which opened in February 2020\, manifests this mission. It is transparent\, accessible\, flexible\, easy to navigate\, promotes digital literacy\, and is welcoming and inclusive to all ages. The library is prideful without being ostentatious. It is now a place where a love for learning is on display\, showing residents that they deserve to aspire for better. The Lawrence County Public Library is an act of love. \nEarn 1 AIA LU \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Lighting WELL
DESCRIPTION:Lighting and the WELL Building Standard \nWe know how to design environments that fuel our bodies\, keep us moving\, inspire our best work and facilitate a good night’s sleep. The Well Building Standard endeavors to provide an evidence-based process to validate an approach to design for environmental health and well-being. This seminar explores methods to achieve health and well-being in the Light Concept of the 2019 Well Buildings Standard version 2.0 as it pertains to both electric and daylighting sources. We spend more than 90% of our lives indoors. Studies show strong links between better views\, brighter light and better performance in office environments. The Light Well Concept promotes exposure to light and aims to create lighting environments that are optimal for visual\, mental\, and biological health. Discover how the standard supports circadian stimulus\, hormone levels and the sleep-wake cycles of occupants derived through scientific and medical knowledge to promote alertness\, better performance\, and better sleep quality while potentially reducing obesity\, diabetes\, depression\, breast cancer\, sleep disorders and more. \nEarn 1.0 AIA LU \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Connecting the Dots: From People to Planet

We have all heard about this three legged stool of Sustainability and never has it been more apparent – that all three legs are falling down. All three are undergoing a current crisis. SUMMARY:Transportation Noise Control in Residential Buildings
DESCRIPTION:In urban and suburban environments\, transportation noise continually impacts residential properties 24 hours a day\, 7 days a week. This applies to not only major sources such as interstate highways\, airports\, and railways but to secondary streets in urban environments as well\, where buildings crowd closely to busy roadways. Understanding the fundamentals of noise\, noise regulations\, building shell design\, and implementation are key to creating quiet living spaces in close proximity to major and “minor” transportation noise sources. \nIt is our goal to educate residential building designers in the basics of transportation noise and in the fundamentals of outdoor to indoor noise control. Noise impact upon building occupants disrupts work\, sleep\, and leisure time which in turn adds stress\, fatigue\, and aggravation to daily life. Quiet environments promote good physical\, mental\, and spiritual health. \nEarn 1.0 AIA LU|HSW \nRegister online.
