SUMMARY:Building Tall with Mass Timber
DESCRIPTION:Manufactured mass timber allows buildings to be built faster\, more sustainably with a smaller carbon footprint than steel and concrete\, and a natural look that is healthier for users. In Charlottesville\, Virginia\, the tallest mass timber building in the state rises with the 8-story 187\,000 sq. ft. Apex Clean Energy Headquarters building. In Washington D.C.\, a 2-story 105\,000 sq. ft. vertical expansion of 80 M Street\, a Class-A office property\, is the District’s first mass timber office project. \nJoin the Institute for Sustainable Earth and the Center for Real Estate Entrepreneurship of George Mason University for a discussion with architectural firms William McDonough + Partners and Hickok Cole on these two pioneering real estate projects. \nEarn 1.25 AIA LU | Elective \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Protected Membrane Roof (PMR) Systems for Low Slope Roof Assemblies
DESCRIPTION:Provides a comparison of the functional and physical features of PMR systems to conventional low-slope roofing applications. Includes a discussion about the ASCE 7 standard and its impact on wind uplift design and how weather events such as hail impact roof design. \nSpecifically\, discussion will focus on:\n• Compare the components\, characteristics and cautions of conventional low-slope roofing assemblies to determine their impact on a building’s energy use\, safety and service life\n• Explain why a Protected Membrane Roof (PMR) assembly improves the durability and long-term performance of a roof by preserving the insulations efficiency and reducing damaging stresses a roof experiences under temperature change and physical abuse\n• Discuss the importance of proper wind uplift design and wind testing protocols\, and review the changes within the latest version of ASCE 7\n• Explain why a PMR assembly with concrete-topped insulated roofing panels can eliminate major causes of leaks and roof failures by examining how it protects the waterproofing membrane and insulation from wind\, hail\, UV\, thermal cycling and physical abuse\n• Identify the four ballast design options for a PMR assembly and discuss how they can contribute to a sustainable design strategy by examining how they reduce rooftop temperatures and the heat island effect. \nEarn 1.0 AIA LU | HSW \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:The North Atlantic Cities: A Book Event & Lecture with Author Charles B. Duff
DESCRIPTION:“The North Atlantic Cities” by Charles B. Duff\, which is available for the first time in the United States\, is a book on urban development and urban life masquerading as a book on architecture. It is the story of four hundred years of architecture and urban development in four countries: the Netherlands\, Great Britain\, Ireland and the United States\, particularly cities like New York\, Boston\, Washington D.C.\, Philadelphia\, Baltimore\, Savannah\, to name a few. \nThe author starts with a kind of building few others have considered – the row house\, which could very well be the key to understanding why many of the world’s great cities look and function as they do. From the 1600’s to today as the author theorizes\, this innocuous-seeming housing type is perhaps the antidote to suburban sprawl\, urban decay and the worst catastrophes of global climate change. \nEarn 1.0 AIA LU \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Let's Start the Climate Take Back
DESCRIPTION:According to research conducted by Interface and Net Impact\, 95% of climate experts believe that it is possible to reverse global warming and 91% of young leaders agree. The reason that both think it is possible is because we have everything we need\, and both think the only thing that stands in our way is business as usual. Last year\, the most comprehensive guide to reversing global warming was introduced by Paul Hawken entitled Drawdown followed by Bruce King™s The New Carbon Architecture. Interface™s ‘Climate Take Back’ plan offers an easy-to-understand framework which can be understood\, adopted\, and implemented by any organization. The research and the framework will be provided to all participants. \nCEU is AIA\, IDCEC\, HSW\, and GBCI approved. \nRegister online and enter the code 4X1Z

SUMMARY:Key Retirement Planning Strategies for Architects and Firm Owners
DESCRIPTION:“RETIREMENT PLANNING IS LIKE A GAME OF CHESS”: Key Retirement Planning Strategies\, Lessons\, and Moves for Architects and Architectural Firm Owners to Help Build and Achieve a Life-long Winning Retirement Game Plan for Themselves and Their Families. \nAuthor Allan Rufus once said\, “Life is like a game of chess. To win you have to make a move.” As this is true in chess\, so it is also true in life and in creating and achieving a winning financial and retirement plan for yourself\, your family and business if you are a principal owner. \nBut in an increasingly changing world\, how do we know what moves to make? Our current times have been labeled as the “4th Industrial Revolution.” This “revolution” is being described as one that will usher in incredible changes in the way we work and the way we view work. How will this effect your industry\, your investment choices\, and your personal retirement planning? \nThis webinar presentation will include relevant historical evidence and solution-based strategies to help solve the complex issues of investment\, tax\, and legacy planning for you and your family. The goal of presentation is to share some insight into how to better prepare for these potential changes and address what specific moves it takes for you to build\, implement and maintain a solid\, comprehensive retirement and legacy plan that is adaptable\, preemptive\, and well positioned for success given your unique situation. \nEarn 1.0 AIA LU | Elective \nRegister online.
