SUMMARY:The North Atlantic Cities: A Book Event & Lecture with Author Charles B. Duff
DESCRIPTION:“The North Atlantic Cities” by Charles B. Duff\, which is available for the first time in the United States\, is a book on urban development and urban life masquerading as a book on architecture. It is the story of four hundred years of architecture and urban development in four countries: the Netherlands\, Great Britain\, Ireland and the United States\, particularly cities like New York\, Boston\, Washington D.C.\, Philadelphia\, Baltimore\, Savannah\, to name a few. \nThe author starts with a kind of building few others have considered – the row house\, which could very well be the key to understanding why many of the world’s great cities look and function as they do. From the 1600’s to today as the author theorizes\, this innocuous-seeming housing type is perhaps the antidote to suburban sprawl\, urban decay and the worst catastrophes of global climate change. \nEarn 1.0 AIA LU \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Let's Start the Climate Take Back
DESCRIPTION:According to research conducted by Interface and Net Impact\, 95% of climate experts believe that it is possible to reverse global warming and 91% of young leaders agree. The reason that both think it is possible is because we have everything we need\, and both think the only thing that stands in our way is business as usual. Last year\, the most comprehensive guide to reversing global warming was introduced by Paul Hawken entitled Drawdown followed by Bruce King™s The New Carbon Architecture. Interface™s ‘Climate Take Back’ plan offers an easy-to-understand framework which can be understood\, adopted\, and implemented by any organization. The research and the framework will be provided to all participants. \nCEU is AIA\, IDCEC\, HSW\, and GBCI approved. \nRegister online and enter the code 4X1Z

DESCRIPTION:“RETIREMENT PLANNING IS LIKE A GAME OF CHESS”: Key Retirement Planning Strategies\, Lessons\, and Moves for Architects and Architectural Firm Owners to Help Build and Achieve a Life-long Winning Retirement Game Plan for Themselves and Their Families. \nAuthor Allan Rufus once said\, “Life is like a game of chess. To win you have to make a move.” As this is true in chess\, so it is also true in life and in creating and achieving a winning financial and retirement plan for yourself\, your family and business if you are a principal owner. \nBut in an increasingly changing world\, how do we know what moves to make? Our current times have been labeled as the “4th Industrial Revolution.” This “revolution” is being described as one that will usher in incredible changes in the way we work and the way we view work. How will this effect your industry\, your investment choices\, and your personal retirement planning? \nThis webinar presentation will include relevant historical evidence and solution-based strategies to help solve the complex issues of investment\, tax\, and legacy planning for you and your family. The goal of presentation is to share some insight into how to better prepare for these potential changes and address what specific moves it takes for you to build\, implement and maintain a solid\, comprehensive retirement and legacy plan that is adaptable\, preemptive\, and well positioned for success given your unique situation. \nEarn 1.0 AIA LU | Elective \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:2021 AIA Virginia Prize Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The 2021 AIA Virginia Prize competition — which took place over the weekend of Jan. 22–25 — was inspired by the Equal Justice Initiative’s Community Remembrance Project and challenged students to design a pillar installation for the City of Alexandria’s Market Square. Each school’s faculty reviewed the submissions and sent up to 10 finalists for final consideration by the jury \nIn a new initiative this year\, AIA Virginia is convening a post-competition conversation with the students from the 4 schools\, the jurors\, and designers from the region. The virtual panel discussion takes place at 5:30 p.m. on Friday\, April 16. \nRegister to see the winning submissions\, hear jury comments\, and join the discussion. \nSubmitted for AIA CES approval.

SUMMARY:Design for Water: Resilience and Discovery
DESCRIPTION:This session explores how design engages with water\, conservation\, water quality protection\, and how resilient design responds to rainfall\, storms\, and flooding. We will also discuss how design offers teachable moments of water as a resource and mutable element. \nAs designers focused on designing equitable and resilient educational spaces\, this session explores how design engages with water\, one of earth’s precious resources: water conservation and protection of water quality at the building\, campus and regional scales; resilient design responses to rainfall\, storms\, flood and inundation; design that offers teachable moments about water as resource and mutable element; strategies that promote a sense of discovery and delight about water; fostering a relationship between designers\, users and operators for project performance. \nConfirmed presenters:\nPhoebe Crisman\, AIA\, UVA\, Director of Global Environments + Sustainability Major \nErin English\, PE\, LEED AP\, Practice Leader\, Biohabitats \nOle Schrøder\, Partner at TREDJE NATUR/THIRD NATURE\, a Copenhagen-based multi-disciplinary design firm \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Enduring Beauty: High Performance Open Jointed Cladding Systems
DESCRIPTION:This course encourages participants to think outside the box and consider using polymer cladding as a material to create aesthetic\, enduring\, and moisture resistant rainscreens that will better protect buildings and its occupants. \nWe will discuss other more commonly used products and the issues faced with each. We will also consider life cycle costs of various cladding options\, including polymer. Finally\, participants will leave with a thorough understanding of how to install polymer extrusions as cladding. We will explore doing so on different substrates\, detailing around openings\, transitions between differing cladding materials and how to handle joints between cladding components with the goal of using polymer to promote health\, safety\, and welfare of both people and the environment. \nEarn 1.0 AIA LU | HSW \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:“Silo City: From Ruins to City” Screening and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join AIA Richmond and AIA Northern Virginia for a jointly held virtual event on the award-winning short film “Silo City.” The film was awarded second place in the 2020 AIA Film Challenge. \nHear directly from architects Studio V Architecture and film-maker Jake Catalanotto about the importance of this transformative project to the city of Buffalo. “The Buffalo grain elevators at Silo City once fueled the growth of the city – but now they are abandoned. This site can be a hub for the cultural and economic resurgence of Buffalo\, a place of connection for the communities it once failed\, and an experiment in creating a sustainable American city.” \nThe story of the creation and development of this project is a compelling example of the power of design to bring about positive change in communities. Storytelling has always been integral to the work of architects in community-based projects and the medium of film-making is expanding this tool and the ability to connect with wider audiences through social media and other forms of digital outreach. Programs like the AIA Film Challenge continue to encourage architects\, film-makers\, and their clients to capture unique stories to share with others through the creative medium of film-making. \nEarn 1.0 AIA LU | HSW \nRegister online.
