SUMMARY:WIA Construction Tour: The Commodore
DESCRIPTION:$15 per person\nHappy Hour at Courthhaus Social to follow. (map) \nTour Waiver Form – Please download\, sign and bring with you to the tour \nParticipants will tour The Commodore\, a 20-story\, 423-unit apartment building that is primarily new construction yet also incorporates facades of two historically important buildings. The project is pursuing LEED Platinum and is situated adjacent to the Arlington Virginia’s Courthouse Complex. It will be the tallest building in the area capturing sweeping views from downtown DC to the National Monument\, National Cathedral\, Tysons Corner\, Arlington Cemetery and the Pentagon via the occupied roof deck. This architect-led tour will do a deep-dive into how the building systems had to be designed and constructed to meet the challenges of the metro tunnels running directly underneath the development’s 3-story\, below-grade parking area and ground floor retail spaces. SUMMARY:Taliesin Colloquium 2023: The Evolution of Preservation Standards and Guidelines
DESCRIPTION:Join the AIA National Historic Resources Committee for a colloquium on The Evolution of Preservation Standards and Guidelines sponsored to be held at Frank Lloyd Wright’s historic Taliesin West in Scottsdale\, Arizona on February 3-4. \n\nThis event will inform dialogue on historic district guidelines at the local level\, as well as the state and national level on ways that preservation standards and guidelines can better interact with and complement energy codes and performance standards\, as well as resilience guidelines\, and to foster community equity. \n\nWe must ask if the current policies and standards governing historic preservation continue to be viable as the world is far different than it was when the standards were written.  The current climate crisis has changed codes and regulations and goals toward sustainable building practices.  Equally our understanding of the need for historic preservation to take on a more holistic view of sustainability including social\, cultural and economic equity has intensified and calls for us to look closely as to whether current standards are inclusive or exclusive.  Are the current policies and practices of historic preservation still valid or must they mature to meet the current challenges?  How can we respond to these challenges and prepare for the future?   Do policies and practices need to be open to change? DESCRIPTION:Materials as a Design Tool: A Travel Through Innovative Circular Design Philosophy & Smart Sustainable Building Practices — FULL info here \nSpeaker: Hanaa Dahy\nAssociate Professor\, Sustainable Design within Innovation & Technology\, Aalborg University\, Copenhagen\, and Director\, BioMat + BioMat@Copenhagen \n‘Materials as a Design Tool’ is the design philosophy of architect and engineer Hanaa Dahy\, whose practice is based on giving alternative renewable resources a second chance and a vital role in the design process. Focused on locally available and sustainable materials\, Hanaa Dahy and her BioMat research teams in Stuttgart and Copenhagen take an innovative and carbon-reducing approach to construction by using natural\, fiber-based biocomposites and seasonal plant-based materials like straw\, flax\, and hemp. BioMat’s wide-ranging work includes shell constructions\, bridges\, furniture\, building components\, multi-functional integrated sandwich panels\, and adaptive façade systems that integrate robotic fabrication\, additive manufacturing\, and automation technologies. \nIn this lecture\, Dahy will highlight the novel work of BioMat and discuss how smart materials\, diverse manufacturing technologies\, and the rediscovery of local crafts are providing new ways of understanding the future of sustainable architecture. \nSelect works by BioMat will be on view in Campbell Hall’s Elmaleh Gallery from January 18–February 3\, 2023. \nThis event is in-person only; it will be recorded and made available on UVA School of Architecture’s Youtube Channel.

She has been named one of the top 25 most admired design educators in the U.S. by DesignIntelligence and an Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture Distinguished Professor and was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows. \nA licensed architect\, her professional experience includes work for Pei\, Cobb\, Freed and Partners and Richard Meier and Partners before founding Cheng-Olson Design.

SUMMARY:Embodied Carbon 101: Certifications + Commitments—A Deeper Dive
DESCRIPTION:Learn to evaluate and leverage certifications and commitments for the greatest impact. \nTake a closer look at how embodied carbon is incorporated—or will be incorporated—into sustainability programs for the industry and how carbon-thoughtful design is streamlined or incentivized through these programs. The course begins with a look at the established AIA 2030 Commitment\, its success in addressing operational energy\, and its next iteration\, which will include embodied carbon. The AIA 2030 Commitment discussion is followed by an introduction to the SE 2050 Commitment\, which is an embodied carbon-focused commitment born out of the Structural Engineering Institute\, to be launched in November 2020. \nAfter looking at example commitments\, the course introduces the International Living Future Institute’s Zero Carbon Certification\, a relatively new certification that looks holistically at operational energy and embodied carbon. And\, following Zero Carbon\, the Passive House certification is introduced\, suggesting ways that practitioners can account for embodied carbon while pursuing this performance-focused certification. Through discussing four major industry sustainability programs\, this course will help practitioners to distinguish where embodied carbon is built into certifications and commitments\, and where embodied carbon considerations might need to be engineered into design and certification processes for holistic carbon reduction.
