SUMMARY:Designing for Fire Safety
DESCRIPTION:When considering the building enclosure\, fire safety is an important design factor and needs to be considered hand-in hand with energy code requirements. The NFPA 285 “Standard Fire Test Method for Evaluation of Fire Propagation Characteristics of Exterior Non-Load-Bearing Wall Assemblies Containing Combustible Components” is a common consideration with modern building assemblies that use combustible materials. This presentation will review the history and scope of the NFPA 285 test standard\, and its adoption within the International Building Code (IBC). It will outline the criteria for compliance\, as well as identify triggers and contributors under the standard. The presentation will review how the selection building components such as insulation\, air/water resistive barriers and claddings\, can affect the fire performance of an assembly and identify solutions and common paths for compliance. \nEarn 1.0 AIA LU | HSW \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Stories in Stone: Master Artisans on Tools\, Technique\, and Meaning
DESCRIPTION:Craftspeople in the building arts bring enduring beauty to our built environments. Through their mastery of technique and dedication to excellence\, they create three-dimensional works of art that enrich the world in which we live. \nIn this session\, three master artisans—stone mason Joe Alonso of the Washington National Cathedral\, stone carver and letterer Nicholas Benson of the John Stevens Shop in Newport\, Rhode Island\, and stone carver and sculptor Sebastian Martorana of Baltimore\, Maryland—share their knowledge of tools\, materials\, and technique and reflect on the attitudes and values that shape and give meaning to their work. Folklife curator Marjorie Hunt\, co-director of the documentary films Good Work: Masters of the Building Arts and The Stone Carvers\, moderates the conversation. \nLearn more.

SUMMARY:WIA Workshop: Difficult Conversations\, Negotiations\, and Disagreements
DESCRIPTION:This is the third and final workshop of WIA’s 2021 Communication Workshop Series. \nOn a good day\, people struggle with conversations and communication that bear weight\, heightened emotions\, and conflict. Add in a high-value want\, something like a raise or a better work situation\, and negotiations can make conversations even more difficult – try a disagreement? Cue stress\, people-pleasing\, passive-aggression\, and more bad behavior that helps no one. \nJoin us for an interactive workshop to flex small talk and conversation skills with Jen Brown\, founder of The Engaging Educator. \n2 AIA LU | Elective \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Building Better Futures in Native American Communities
DESCRIPTION:The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and Bureau of Indian Education (BIE)\, departments of the U.S. Department of the Interior provide oversight of the planning\, design and construction of educational facilities on Native American reservations across the United States.  The BIA utilizes the BIA School Facilities Design and Space Guidelines as a template for the planning and design of reservation schools.  The Design and Space Guidelines were developed collaboratively by the BIA and MOA Architecture of Denver\, CO.  At the time of the development of the guidelines\, MOA Architecture was a Native American owned architectural firm. \nDuring this program\, MOA Principal and Educational Planner Jack Mousseau will discuss typical conditions and inequities encountered in reservation schools prior to renovation or replacement.  He will then address the reasons for the development and intent of the BIA School Facilities Design and Space Guidelines\, providing a brief overview of the documents.  We will then review how the guidelines function and the processes involved in the development of reservation schools.  Mr. Mousseau will share the design outcome of several BIA schools resulting from the guidelines as an illustration of their performance. \nPresented by Jack Mousseau\, AIA\, A4LE\, LEED AP\, Principal\, Educational Planner from MOA ARCHITECTURE. Webinar organized by the AIA Northern Virginia Committee on Architecture for Education and AIA Virginia. \nAfter attending this program\, participants will be able to: \n1. Discuss the typical conditions encountered on Native American reservation educational facilities.\n2. Describe the development and intent of the BIA School Facilities Design and Space Guidelines.\n3. Explain the process for utilization of the BIA School Facilities Design and Space Guidelines.\n4. Illustrate the appropriate use of the guidelines and discuss examples of their successful implementation. \nEarn 1.0 AIA LU | HSW  \nRegister online. \nFor special accommodations to this event or if you have any questions\, please contact the CAE at cae@aianova.org.

SUMMARY:Let’s Get You Licensed: Amber Book
DESCRIPTION:With the Amber Book video series he’s created (see a sample here)\, Michael Ermann\, AIA\, has helped 12\,000 emerging professionals study for the ARE. He was the first person in the nation to pass all six ARE 5.0 divisions\, and has taught intensive three-day courses at AIA New York\, AIA Miami\, AIA Dallas\, AIA Houston\, AIA Raleigh\, AIA Northern Virginia\, AIA New Orleans\, AIA New Mexico\, AIA Alaska\, and AIA Washington DC. \nThe small portion of the course he’s posted on YouTube has more than 6 million views and more than 30\,000 subscribers. In 2019 AIA Virginia gave him its Award for Distinguished Achievement for his live’s work as an educator. It also recognized his book\, Architectural Acoustics Illustrated (Wiley\, 2015) with its Prize for Design Research (it was the second time he won this research award). Michael is a full tenured professor at Virginia Tech where he’s taught design studio\, building systems\, materials & methods of construction\, and advanced architectural acoustics for 20 years (including many of you in the Richmond area). He’s pretty sure he knows more about this test and how people study for it than anyone in the world. \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Building Tall with Mass Timber
DESCRIPTION:Manufactured mass timber allows buildings to be built faster\, more sustainably with a smaller carbon footprint than steel and concrete\, and a natural look that is healthier for users. In Charlottesville\, Virginia\, the tallest mass timber building in the state rises with the 8-story 187\,000 sq. ft. Apex Clean Energy Headquarters building. In Washington D.C.\, a 2-story 105\,000 sq. ft. vertical expansion of 80 M Street\, a Class-A office property\, is the District’s first mass timber office project. \nJoin the Institute for Sustainable Earth and the Center for Real Estate Entrepreneurship of George Mason University for a discussion with architectural firms William McDonough + Partners and Hickok Cole on these two pioneering real estate projects. \nEarn 1.25 AIA LU | Elective \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Protected Membrane Roof (PMR) Systems for Low Slope Roof Assemblies
DESCRIPTION:Provides a comparison of the functional and physical features of PMR systems to conventional low-slope roofing applications. Includes a discussion about the ASCE 7 standard and its impact on wind uplift design and how weather events such as hail impact roof design. \nSpecifically\, discussion will focus on:\n• Compare the components\, characteristics and cautions of conventional low-slope roofing assemblies to determine their impact on a building’s energy use\, safety and service life\n• Explain why a Protected Membrane Roof (PMR) assembly improves the durability and long-term performance of a roof by preserving the insulations efficiency and reducing damaging stresses a roof experiences under temperature change and physical abuse\n• Discuss the importance of proper wind uplift design and wind testing protocols\, and review the changes within the latest version of ASCE 7\n• Explain why a PMR assembly with concrete-topped insulated roofing panels can eliminate major causes of leaks and roof failures by examining how it protects the waterproofing membrane and insulation from wind\, hail\, UV\, thermal cycling and physical abuse\n• Identify the four ballast design options for a PMR assembly and discuss how they can contribute to a sustainable design strategy by examining how they reduce rooftop temperatures and the heat island effect. \nEarn 1.0 AIA LU | HSW \nRegister online.
