SUMMARY:Projecting Fellows Dialogue Series: INFRASTRUCTURES AND ECOLOGIES
DESCRIPTION:UVA’s Projecting Fellows brings together the 2019-2020 class of fellows from American architecture schools to explore a cross section of emerging interests in the discipline and the vehicle of the fellowship project. Each year\, several architecture schools nationwide name fellows to join their programs and develop an intensive research or teaching project during a short-term appointment. With the fellowship comes some combination of project support\, cross-pollination between research and teaching\, and a platform with which to present and exhibit the work. Commonly selected via national call for proposals\, fellowship projects are dually indicative of emerging interests in academia and evolving institutional agendas. \nWhile each school supports the development and dissemination of fellowship work\, no comprehensive venue for dialogue between fellows has taken shape. Leveraging the new normal of virtual engagement\, Projecting Fellows creates a discursive platform\, inviting fellows to share their work and to address emergent directions in architectural discourse. The paradigm shifts of 2020 make such dialogue across geographic boundaries and institutional lines more critical than ever. Projecting Fellows will address the meta project of the architectural fellowship – its role\, its curation\, and its consequences in shaping the discipline. \nThe series was organized by Assistant Profs. Katie MacDonald and Kyle Schumann and will be hosted virtually over five evenings by the Uni. of Virginia School of Architecture. \nWk 3 Fellows:\nJorge Orozco Gonzalez\, Architectural Design Fellow\, Princeton Uni. 2018-2021\nKaren Kubey\, Design for Spatial Justice Fellow\, Uni. of Oregon\, 2019-20\nPiergianna Mazzocca\, Emerging Scholar in Design\, Uni. of Texas at Austin\, 2019-21\nYoung-Tack Oh\, Michigan Mellon Design Fellow on Egalitarianism and the Metropolis\, Uni. of Michigan\, 2019-21\nRyan Roark\, Ventulett NEXT Generation Teaching Fellow\, Georgia Tech\, 2019-21 \nModerators: Sylvia Lavin + Jason Young \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:The Restoration Dialogue: Solving the Unknowns of Preservation and Restoration The Branch House Pipes
DESCRIPTION:The Branch House plumbing is remarkable in that so much of the original piping is still in use after 100 years but it is causing damage to the decorative plaster. \nTracing the pipes has led to understanding how the house was built behind the surfaces you see.  You will see various strategies in investigating behind the walls\, spaces not normally seen by the public including the highest and lowest parts of the building\, and some of the 1916 construction drawings from Pope’s office.  You will learn about construction techniques that were novel in 1919 but are common today and things to consider when describing work to be done that you cannot see. Like a simple plumbing job today\, what started as a seemingly mundane task escalated into a historical reimagining of the entire building and discovery of what was else needs to be done! \nPanelists: \nWalter M. Dotts III\, Trustee – Old House Authority\, and great-grandson of John Kerr Branch and Beulah Gould Branch \nCalder Loth\, Architectural Historian \nRegister: https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/4786486 \nEarn 1.0 AIA LU

SUMMARY:Placemaking: Shaping Your Environments
DESCRIPTION:When we think of placemaking\, we typically imagine how we dress up our favorite public space\, but the concept of place is so much bigger. Place is ubiquitous. It effects everything we do and it is one of the largest determinants of the type of life we lead. We are always surrounded by place. How places are built\, how they function\, and how they are designed dictate how people go about leading their lives. Our places have the ability to make us proud\, or make us feel ashamed. They have the ability to bring us closer to one another\, or make us feel alone. The places we shape\, determine our physical\, mental\, social and economic health. In understanding how much our places shape our lives\, we begin to understand how much better we need to do in shaping our places. \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:The Ramsey Homes: An Example of Early Public Housing in Alexandria-Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The City of Alexandria invites you to join a symposium on the Ramsey Homes\, which served as affordable housing units from 1953 to 2018. Originally built as temporary housing for African American war industry workers in the 1940s\, the homes served as permanent affordable housing for Alexandria residents for 65 years. The Ramsey Homes were located in the heart of the Parker-Gray Historic District and the African American enclave known as Uptown. This symposium tackles issues of race and equity in housing\, of community and community memory\, segregation’s impact on the African American workforce and the landscape of public housing. The Covid-19 pandemic has made America understand the importance of access to affordable housing\, transportation and amenities for all. This symposium examines Alexandria’s public housing history and the strides made in making Alexandria a livable and welcoming community. \nThe symposium will combine panel discussions on the building’s role in architectural history\, as well as a presentation on the residents who lived there for more than six decades. Panelists include historian Krystyn Moon\, architectural historian Anna Maas\, genealogist Char McCargo Bah\, civil engineer John Dumsick\, and architects Al Cox and Purvi Irwin. A virtual tour of the new project will follow the presentations. \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Governor's Summit on Equitable Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:Shaping a more inclusive Commonwealth \nThe Governor’s Summit on Equitable Collaboration is hosted by the UVA Institute for Engagement & Negotiation in partnership with Governor Ralph Northam and his administration. This event is for all those who might be involved or interested in community engagement\, collaboration\, and equity – whether in health\, education\, natural resources\, or community development. We hope you all will attend this virtual event where people from across the Commonwealth will have an opportunity to learn about Equitable Collaboration\, to share their own tools\, and to discuss Virginia policy needs to advance Equitable Collaboration. \nIEN’s new Equitable Collaboration framework – itself the expression of decades of thinking and researching our field of practice and the discipline of conflict resolution – has been developed and challenged. These six elements – adaptive\, deliberative\, inclusive\, responsive\, trauma-informed\, and truth-seeking – guide how community conversations may be designed and conducted\, whether through a single meeting\, a community dialogue\, or a long-term collaborative change process. The Toolkit itself is a product of a robust engagement process. A diverse national advisory committee helped develop the structure and nature of the content for the Toolkit. It is available as an online resource and may be downloaded as a pdf at transformingcommunityspaces.org. \nSUMMIT GOALS: \n\nIntroduce and showcase the six principles for Equitable Collaboration.\nReview the growth and trajectory of collaboration in Virginia\, and its future needs to ensure equity.\nIllustrate the six principles for Equitable Collaboration through case studies in health\, education\, natural resources\, and community development.\nEnable participants to share resources around equitable collaboration approaches\, tools\, resources.\nEnable participant discussion and input for policy needs in Virginia to advance equitable collaboration.\n\nKEYNOTE SPEAKERS: \nRalph S. SUMMARY:Equity in the Built Environment: Improving Racial Equity through Greener Design
DESCRIPTION:Understand how architects across the U.S. are working to improve the environmental and social sustainability of communities by protecting neighborhoods from gentrification\, installing parks and public art exhibits in urban centers\, and creating state-of-the-art libraries in financially challenged neighborhoods. Antoine Bryant\, Assoc. AIA\, project manager and business development at the Houston office of Moody Nolan; Gabrielle Bullock\, FAIA\, a principal and the director of global diversity at Perkins&Will in Los Angeles; and Rico Quirindongo\, AIA\, formerly a principal at DLR Group\, now Deputy Director for City of Seattle Office of Planning and Community Development; discuss their work in these cities. Projects discussed include Midtown Public Square in Seattle; Destination Crenshaw in Los Angeles; and the Library Learning Center in Houston. \nImproving Racial Equity Through Greener Design is based on the American Institute of Architects’ Blueprint for Better campaign to transform the day-to-day practice of architecture to achieve a zero-carbon\, resilient\, healthy\, just\, and equitable built environment. \nThis program continues the National Building Museum’s Equity in the Built Environment series of conversations that focus on how buildings\, landscapes\, interiors\, and streets can be the cause of—and\, more important\, the cure for—social and racial disparities. \n\nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Optimized Acoustics
DESCRIPTION:Complying with the more stringent acoustic performance criteria in the standards\, guidelines\, and building rating systems has become more challenging in today’s predominantly larger and more open commercial interiors. This is in part due to trends towards more reflective floor materials\, fewer walls\, and an abundance of glass. Higher amounts of sound absorption are required to limit reverberation\, increase speech intelligibility and prevent widespread noise disturbances. This presentation will educate designers on achieving the required amount of noise control using high-performance\, modular\, acoustic ceilings. In locations where transmission of noise from one room into another needs to be prevented\, the use of ceilings alone as sound blockers\, for example when the demising wall stops at the ceiling level\, no longer complies with the standards\, guidelines and rating systems. This presentation will educate designers on blocking sound using walls and lightweight plenum barriers so that their designs comply not only with user expectations\, but also the higher sound isolation criteria in the acoustics standards and guidelines. \nEarn 1.0 AIA LU | HSW \nRegister online. \nPresented in collaboration with Rockfon.

SUMMARY:Large Doors: How to Select the Right Door
DESCRIPTION:Offered by AIA Northern Virginia in partnership with T.W. Perry \nModern design trends are favoring larger openings\, and while this blank canvas offers the architect a wide-range of options\, it can also pose a challenge. Because of almost unlimited variations of different types\, styles\, and available options for large doors\, it is often more important that the architect understands how to make the selection process\, rather than which specific door to choose. The process for specifying should include client aesthetic expectations\, environmental conditions\, building performance\, and durability concerns. \nEarn 1 AIA LU|HSW \nRegister online. \nAIA Members: $0; Non-members: $10
