DESCRIPTION:Marcelo Faiden is the co-founder (with Sebastián Adamo) of Adamo-Faiden Architects based in Bueno Aires\, Argentina. Their works have been widely exhibited and published\, including at the Sao Paulo Architecture Biennial (2019)\, at the Chicago Architecture Biennial (2017)\, at the Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt (2015)\, at the LIGA gallery in Mexico City (2012) and at the Guggenheim Museum in New York (2010)\, among others. Four monographic publications compiled the work of Adamo-Faiden\, the latest of which was published by TC Cuadernos in Spain (The Contemporary Constructor\, Valencia\, 2018). \nMarcello Faiden was a professor at FADU-UBA (Buenos Aires\, 2005-2010/2016-2018) and Di Tella University (Buenos Aires\, 2012-2015). SUMMARY:Optimized Acoustics
DESCRIPTION:Complying with the more stringent acoustic performance criteria in the standards\, guidelines\, and building rating systems has become more challenging in today’s predominantly larger and more open commercial interiors. This is in part due to trends towards more reflective floor materials\, fewer walls\, and an abundance of glass. Higher amounts of sound absorption are required to limit reverberation\, increase speech intelligibility and prevent widespread noise disturbances. This presentation will educate designers on achieving the required amount of noise control using high-performance\, modular\, acoustic ceilings. In locations where transmission of noise from one room into another needs to be prevented\, the use of ceilings alone as sound blockers\, for example when the demising wall stops at the ceiling level\, no longer complies with the standards\, guidelines and rating systems. SUMMARY:Fiske and Marie Kimball: Shaping Our Experience of Buildings and Objects
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies for an investigation of the many ways Fiske and Marie Kimball shaped our experience and understanding of art and architecture in the 20th century. From his pioneering publication Thomas Jefferson\, Architect in 1916 through his thirty-year connection with Monticello and position as director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, Fiske Kimball remained a powerful and influential voice in the arts. Dubbed “the dean of American architectural history\,” his scholarship established the rich legacy of the past while his criticism and involvement with public monuments guided design in the present. As a preservationist\, he played a critical role at Monticello\, Colonial Williamsburg\, Fairmount Park\, and numerous other historic sites; as the director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (1925-55)\, he not only built the collection but also determined the display of the objects. Marie Kimball\, also a historian and prolific writer\, published widely and is most well known for her multi-volume biography of Thomas Jefferson; her publication Thomas Jefferson’s Cookbook (1941) provided updated recipes for modern audiences; and as the first curator of Monticello she had a seminal role in the display and interpretation of its objects. In her role as Senior Project Manager\, Zena led a multi-firm and multi-stakeholder team along an eight-year journey from its underfunded concept phase to final occupancy and celebrated public success. Other noteworthy projects include The International Civil Rights Center & Museum in Greensboro\, NC\, the District of Columbia Anacostia and Tenley-Friendship Neighborhood Libraries in Washington\, D.C.\, the Motown Museum expansion in Detroit\, MI\, and urban remembrance projects for Hogan’s Alley in Vancouver\, BC\, Greenville Town Common in Greenville\, NC\, and Destination Crenshaw in Los Angeles\, CA. \nThrough her work with private and public institutions\, Zena engages disenfranchised stakeholders\, unites disparate parties\, and infuses cultural meaning into all her projects.
