SUMMARY:Insulated Metal Panels: The Perfect Envelope Solution
DESCRIPTION:This course reduces a relatively complex subject into practical concepts for the building designer. \nReview the physics of building envelopes\, including hygrothermal loads\, control layers\, climate zones and cladding functions. \nStudy the importance of control layer continuity at wall\, roof\, and slab connections. \nLook at how IMPs perform the same functions as multi-component wall systems through the use of panels joints\, sealants and an insulating core. \nDescribe the concept of the “Perfect/Universal Wall\,” and how to utilize the proper ordering of wall components to greatly simplify wall design in all climate zones. \nThis course also touches on Energy codes\, including their impact on the use of “Perfect/Universal Wall” designs. \nEarn 1.0 AIA LU | HSW \nRegister online. \nPresented in collaboration with Metl-Span.

SUMMARY:Fiske and Marie Kimball: Shaping Our Experience of Buildings and Objects
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies for an investigation of the many ways Fiske and Marie Kimball shaped our experience and understanding of art and architecture in the 20th century. From his pioneering publication Thomas Jefferson\, Architect in 1916 through his thirty-year connection with Monticello and position as director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, Fiske Kimball remained a powerful and influential voice in the arts. Dubbed “the dean of American architectural history\,” his scholarship established the rich legacy of the past while his criticism and involvement with public monuments guided design in the present. As a preservationist\, he played a critical role at Monticello\, Colonial Williamsburg\, Fairmount Park\, and numerous other historic sites; as the director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (1925-55)\, he not only built the collection but also determined the display of the objects. Marie Kimball\, also a historian and prolific writer\, published widely and is most well known for her multi-volume biography of Thomas Jefferson; her publication Thomas Jefferson’s Cookbook (1941) provided updated recipes for modern audiences; and as the first curator of Monticello she had a seminal role in the display and interpretation of its objects. Each of the speakers in this conference will share with us a different facet of the contributions made by this “power couple” of the early twentieth century. \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:“Silo City: From Ruins to City” Screening and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join AIA Richmond and AIA Northern Virginia for a jointly held virtual event on the award-winning short film “Silo City.” The film was awarded second place in the 2020 AIA Film Challenge. \nHear directly from architects Studio V Architecture and film-maker Jake Catalanotto about the importance of this transformative project to the city of Buffalo. “The Buffalo grain elevators at Silo City once fueled the growth of the city – but now they are abandoned. This site can be a hub for the cultural and economic resurgence of Buffalo\, a place of connection for the communities it once failed\, and an experiment in creating a sustainable American city.” \nThe story of the creation and development of this project is a compelling example of the power of design to bring about positive change in communities. Storytelling has always been integral to the work of architects in community-based projects and the medium of film-making is expanding this tool and the ability to connect with wider audiences through social media and other forms of digital outreach. Programs like the AIA Film Challenge continue to encourage architects\, film-makers\, and their clients to capture unique stories to share with others through the creative medium of film-making. \nEarn 1.0 AIA LU | HSW \nRegister online.

Finally\, participants will leave with a thorough understanding of how to install polymer extrusions as cladding.
