SUMMARY:Coating Innovations and the Healthy Building Movement
DESCRIPTION:Indoor air quality is critical to occupant health and well being.  Advanced coatings can help address common concerns prevalent in commercial space. Transparency is critical to selecting products that perform as claimed\, so you’ll learn how to find coatings that are third-party certified. Finally\, you will learn strategies for incorporating natural elements with biophilic design theory. This is especially beneficial in urban areas with minimal exposure to green space. \nEarn 1 AIA LU | HSW \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Fiberglass Fenestration in Commercial Buildings
DESCRIPTION:Whether designing sustainable commercial or institutional building types\, architects carefully consider the qualities and long-term advantages of fenestration materials. Windows and doors provide essential protection and architectural character to a building\, and must also respond to owner-driven requirements like aesthetics\, cost\, performance\, maintenance\, and life cycle. \nFiberglass composite is suitable for windows and doors in any climate or building type. More durable than aluminum or vinyl\, with the thermal efficiency of wood\, fiberglass composite windows are an economically competitive alternative to aluminum and vinyl windows. The multiple advantages and benefits of fiberglass composite make it a versatile fenestration choice because of its strength\, durability\, low maintenance\, energy efficiency\, and sustainable qualities\, as well as its resistance to corrosion\, dents\, and scratches. \nEarn 1 AIA LU | HSW \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Virtual Scavenger Hunt of Downtown Norfolk
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of National Historic Preservation Month\, The Hampton Roads Chapter of the AIA invites you to explore the rich architectural heritage of Downtown Norfolk\, Virginia\, from the comfort of your own home with their FIRST EVER Virtual Scavenger Hunt! \nRedevelopment has radically changed the face of Downtown Norfolk since the 1960s with much of the area falling to the wrecking ball. But\, within the boundaries of the Downtown Historic District and the East Freemason Historic District\, there are extraordinary examples of period architecture\, detailing and craftsmanship on hundreds of historic structures. \nAIA Hampton Roads has identified 18 unique details on 18 different buildings. Your challenge\, if you choose to accept\, is to identify the architectural detail (e.g. a cartouche\, gorgon\, or gargoyle) and the building on which it is found (either by building name\, address or descriptive location such as “the corner of Main and Granby Streets”). \nLearn more>> \nVisit aiahr.org for the Scavenger Hunt Documents \nSubmit your completed Official Entry Form as a PDF by email to Greg Rutledge by 5 p.m. EDT May 31\, 2020. Three fantastic prizes will be awarded (by random drawing) to completed entry forms submitted by the deadline. You may enter as an individual\, family\, firm or team. If entering as a family\, firm\, or team please provide your team name and one point of contact on the entry form. \nIf you have any questions or need assistance with any of the files please contact Greg Rutledge at grutledge@hewv.com and Lisa Jolley at ljolley@hewv.com. \n* This event has been designed to be experienced virtually. AIA Hampton Roads does not encourage anyone to abandon social distancing and health precautions during the pandemic by physically going downtown\, but they do hope that once we can all be out and about again\, you will visit downtown and experience these wonderful buildings and details in person.

SUMMARY:Designing with Insulated Metal Roof Panels
DESCRIPTION:This course focuses on design considerations when using insulated metal roof panels. Panel characteristics\, paint finishes and roof geometry options are reviewed. Support structure requirements (ex: purlins\, joists\, decking) including steel alignment/tolerances\, panel spans and roof diaphragm considerations are studied. Functional aspects including environmental control layers (air\, vapor\, water and thermal) are examined. A full color animated video provides guidance on the step by step process of how IMP roofs are installed. Code compliance including air/water\, thermal\, fire safety and wind uplift is addressed. \nEarn 1 AIA LU | HSW \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Paradigm Shift: The Future of Work and Workplaces
DESCRIPTION:Our workplaces have been disrupted like never before. The Global Work-from-Home Experience Survey was launched in April to answer many questions on the minds of workers\, corporate executives\, office building owners\, property managers\, and workplace designers. \nWhat can we learn from our sudden national field experiment in working and running businesses remotely? How will the aftermath of the pandemic crisis influence how and where people work and the resulting need for office space\, appropriate design\, amenities\, and work practices? \nJoin Kate Lister\, one of the authors of this ground-breaking survey\, the Center for Real Estate Entrepreneurship\, and Executive Development of the George Mason University School of Business\, in a discussion of data-based insights and forecasts on the future of work and workplaces. \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Large Doors: How to Select the Right Door (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Modern design trends are favoring larger openings\, and while this blank canvas offers a wide-range of options\, it can also pose a challenge. Because of the almost unlimited variations of different types\, styles\, and available options for large doors\, it is often more important that the architect understands how to utilize the proper selection process\, rather than which specific door to choose. The process for specifying should include client aesthetic expectations\, environmental conditions\, building performance\, and durability concerns. \nEarn 1 AIA LU | HSW \nRegister online.
