SUMMARY:Large Doors: How to Select the Right Door
DESCRIPTION:Offered and presented by T.W. Perry \n1 AIA LU|HSW.\nFree. Virtual. \nREGISTER >>> \nModern design trends are favoring larger openings\, and while this blank canvas offers the architect a wide-range of options\, it can also pose a challenge. Because of almost unlimited variations of different types\, styles\, and available options for large doors\, it is often more important that the architect understands how to make the selection process\, rather than which specific door to choose. The process for specifying should include client aesthetic expectations\, environmental conditions\, building performance\, and durability concerns. \nLearning Objectives:\nUnderstand the unique design elements of an indoor/outdoor living space and modern trends in large doors.\nDescribe what to consider when balancing client needs with environmental conditions\, building performance\, and durability concerns.\nList the different door types and styles available for transition points between indoor and outdoor areas.\nDiscuss the best process for specifying large doors in commercial and residential projects. \nContact:\nKen Clark\, T.W. Perry\nkclark@twperry.com

SUMMARY:Roundtable Workshop: Ask the BIM Experts - 3D Modeling Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Roundtable Workshop: Ask the BIM Experts – 3D Modeling Strategies Series Part 1 – Coordination Between Disciplines – FULL info here \nModerator:\nSidney Griffin \nSession Description \nTogether we will walk through the challenges we face when coordinating models from each discipline and discuss how we could improve this process. We will address considerations for each discipline’s unique BIM goals and strategize what we each could do differently to improve the workflows for one another. This is a great opportunity to develop BIM management skills to implement BIM in any type of AEC firm on any type of project. Lastly\, we will look at new BIM technologies and assess if the solutions they provide outweigh the cost of implementing the product. \nLearning Objectives \n\n\nLearn strategies to address and improve upon the challenges we face when coordinating models from other disciplines. \n\n\nUnderstand alternative modeling techniques to support other disciplines’ workflows. \n\n\nIdentify new BIM technologies and assess their value to cost ratio for the AEC industry. \n\n\nExplore ways to use data and graphics from other discipline’s BIM Models. \n\n\n1HR AIA LU | Elective

SUMMARY:Cultivating A Path To Fellowship
DESCRIPTION:Cultivating Your Path to Fellowship\nReverse Engineering the FAIA Submission Process to Develop Meaning & Purpose in Practice \nFour\, 1-hour sessions starting Wednesday\, January 25th. \n4 AIA LU | Elective \nRegister>> \nToo often AIA members approach achieving Fellowship at the end of a significant phase of their career. The result is the demographic composition of the College of Fellows remains predominantly older\, white males. These sessions seek to elevate diversity in the College’s ranks by teaching young and mid-career architects to reverse engineer their path to Fellowship using the AIA’s Sample Application\, a specialized outline\, storytelling techniques\, and writing basics to define and amplify their voices and accomplishments. This method advances meaning and intention in attendees’ career paths and\, ultimately\, will bring younger and more diverse professionals to advancing the mission and leadership of the College of Fellows and its grant funding activities. \nMapping a career around AIA Fellowship provides a path to positively impact others and elevate the value\, potential and reach of the many career paths architects take. Attendees will gain inspiration on finding time for introspection\, planning and preparation to explore\, define and elevate meaning in practice. \nLearning Objectives \n\nGain detailed understanding of AIA Fellowship & the process of submission.\nLearn about the value of AIA Fellowship for the advancement of individuals and their work.\nAcquire skills to develop storylines and narratives to capture career milestones and projects.\nTake-away resources on story structure and guidelines for better professional writing

SUMMARY:Hanaa Dahy - Materials as a Design Tool
DESCRIPTION:Materials as a Design Tool: A Travel Through Innovative Circular Design Philosophy & Smart Sustainable Building Practices — FULL info here \nSpeaker: Hanaa Dahy\nAssociate Professor\, Sustainable Design within Innovation & Technology\, Aalborg University\, Copenhagen\, and Director\, BioMat + BioMat@Copenhagen \n‘Materials as a Design Tool’ is the design philosophy of architect and engineer Hanaa Dahy\, whose practice is based on giving alternative renewable resources a second chance and a vital role in the design process. Focused on locally available and sustainable materials\, Hanaa Dahy and her BioMat research teams in Stuttgart and Copenhagen take an innovative and carbon-reducing approach to construction by using natural\, fiber-based biocomposites and seasonal plant-based materials like straw\, flax\, and hemp. BioMat’s wide-ranging work includes shell constructions\, bridges\, furniture\, building components\, multi-functional integrated sandwich panels\, and adaptive façade systems that integrate robotic fabrication\, additive manufacturing\, and automation technologies. \nIn this lecture\, Dahy will highlight the novel work of BioMat and discuss how smart materials\, diverse manufacturing technologies\, and the rediscovery of local crafts are providing new ways of understanding the future of sustainable architecture. \nSelect works by BioMat will be on view in Campbell Hall’s Elmaleh Gallery from January 18–February 3\, 2023. \nThis event is in-person only; it will be recorded and made available on UVA School of Architecture’s Youtube Channel.

SUMMARY:Taliesin Colloquium 2023: The Evolution of Preservation Standards and Guidelines
DESCRIPTION:Join the AIA National Historic Resources Committee for a colloquium on The Evolution of Preservation Standards and Guidelines sponsored to be held at Frank Lloyd Wright’s historic Taliesin West in Scottsdale\, Arizona on February 3-4. \n\nThis event will inform dialogue on historic district guidelines at the local level\, as well as the state and national level on ways that preservation standards and guidelines can better interact with and complement energy codes and performance standards\, as well as resilience guidelines\, and to foster community equity. \n\nWe must ask if the current policies and standards governing historic preservation continue to be viable as the world is far different than it was when the standards were written.  The current climate crisis has changed codes and regulations and goals toward sustainable building practices.  Equally our understanding of the need for historic preservation to take on a more holistic view of sustainability including social\, cultural and economic equity has intensified and calls for us to look closely as to whether current standards are inclusive or exclusive.  Are the current policies and practices of historic preservation still valid or must they mature to meet the current challenges?  How can we respond to these challenges and prepare for the future?   Do policies and practices need to be open to change? Some say that current Standards provide the required flexibility and that that it is the interpretation that has become too rigid.   Others believe that we need additional standards to address issues of social and economic equity.  This Colloquium will take a deep dive into the global issues that preservationists face today and the Standards and Guidelines that have been the backbone of our practice. \n\nOrganized by: \nAIA National Historic Resources Committee \n  \n\nPrice\n\n$300 for AIA members \n$500 for non-members \nRegistration fee includes breakfast\, lunch\, reception\, sessions\, reception\, and Twilight tour. \n\n\n\nCredits\n\n11.25 HSW|LUs
