SUMMARY:Fiberglass Fenestration in Commercial Buildings
DESCRIPTION:Whether designing sustainable commercial or institutional building types\, architects carefully consider the qualities and long-term advantages of fenestration materials. Windows and doors provide essential protection and architectural character to a building\, and must also respond to owner-driven requirements like aesthetics\, cost\, performance\, maintenance\, and life cycle. \nFiberglass composite is suitable for windows and doors in any climate or building type. More durable than aluminum or vinyl\, with the thermal efficiency of wood\, fiberglass composite windows are an economically competitive alternative to aluminum and vinyl windows. The multiple advantages and benefits of fiberglass composite make it a versatile fenestration choice because of its strength\, durability\, low maintenance\, energy efficiency\, and sustainable qualities\, as well as its resistance to corrosion\, dents\, and scratches. \nEarn 1 AIA LU | HSW \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Large Doors: How to Select the Right Door (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Modern design trends are favoring larger openings\, and while this blank canvas offers a wide-range of options\, it can also pose a challenge. Because of the almost unlimited variations of different types\, styles\, and available options for large doors\, it is often more important that the architect understands how to utilize the proper selection process\, rather than which specific door to choose. The process for specifying should include client aesthetic expectations\, environmental conditions\, building performance\, and durability concerns. \nEarn 1 AIA LU | HSW \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Selecting the Right Window Material for Any Application
DESCRIPTION:Brought to you by AIA Northern Virginia through a partnership with T.W. Perry. \nWindows are a critical element of architectural design. Window selection not only significantly impacts the aesthetics of the project\, but also affects the energy efficiency\, comfort\, durability and sustainability of the building once construction is complete. This learning unit will address some of the more popular window choices available today and provide a comparative review of the features and benefits of these very important building elements. This learning unit will also introduce learners to the standards\, tests\, and other performance metrics that will enable specifiers to select the right window for the right application. \nLearning Objectives:\nIdentify different window types based on the product’s base material\, cladding\, and finish\nDiscuss some of the main criteria for evaluating window types commonly available today\nDescribe the performance attributes of each window material\nExplain how different window materials contribute to energy efficiency and overall sustainability goals including recycling and low maintenance \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Biophilic Illusions
DESCRIPTION:Investigate our instinctive attraction and connection to nature\, identified as Biophilia\, as attendees explore the ways that our lives are dependently and beneficially intertwined with nature. Review research documenting the positive outcomes of natural environments on human health and explore the 14 patterns of Biophilic Design\, and how integrating nature’s attributes into architecture enlivens biophilic engagement. We examine optical illusions\, bi-sensory illusions of nature\, and research on sky illusions in relation to architectural design. Lastly\, explore the framework\, mechanics\, and outcomes for health of generating Cognitive Biophilia. \nPresented by Rebecca Clemens of Sky Factory. \n1.0 LU|HSW\, AIA\, USGBC\, and IDCEC credit offered. \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nLearning Objectives:\n• Define the Biophilia Hypothesis\, as well as discuss its bio-evolutionary origins.\n• Summarize the benefits that natural environments\, daylight\, and panoramic views to nature can have on human performance and wellness.\n• Discuss the purpose and the main tenets of Biophilic Design\, as well as its predominant patterns and features.\n• Explain how optical illusions can alter our perception of enclosed interiors and discuss the history and application of illusions in architectural design.\n• Explain the cognitive principles involved in illusory perception and the associated benefits to human health and productivity. \nRegister online.

DESCRIPTION:A Panel Discussion with Bjarke Ingels Group\, Leo A. Daly\, Arlington Public Schools\, Silman\, and Gilbane \nJoin the AIA Northern Virginia Committee on Architecture for Education (CAE) and AIA Virginia at noon on Friday\, March 5\, 2021 for a virtual tour and panel discussion about the new Heights Building\, an Arlington Public School (APS) facility in Northern Virginia. \nThe structural masterpiece is inspired by the values and educational mission of APS and serves as a model example for innovative solutions to school design. SUMMARY:Large Doors: How to Select the Right Door
DESCRIPTION:Offered by AIA Northern Virginia in partnership with T.W. Perry \nModern design trends are favoring larger openings\, and while this blank canvas offers the architect a wide-range of options\, it can also pose a challenge. Because of almost unlimited variations of different types\, styles\, and available options for large doors\, it is often more important that the architect understands how to make the selection process\, rather than which specific door to choose. The process for specifying should include client aesthetic expectations\, environmental conditions\, building performance\, and durability concerns. \nEarn 1 AIA LU|HSW \nRegister online. \nAIA Members: $0; Non-members: $10
