SUMMARY:Technology + Cities: Reshaping the Urban Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Technological advances are rapidly changing the urban environment and how we interact with it. From smart infrastructure to energy and transportation\, architectural design must adapt to support and advance new and developing technologies. Concurrently\, urban architecture is tasked with the goals to be human centered\, inclusive\, and equitable. \nThe movement of major tech companies to cities can have a large impact on the community. While providing jobs\, revenue sources\, and improved infrastructure\, it creates a challenge in the development of public spaces featuring human centered design. This unique convergence of technology and design is exemplified in the design of Virginia Tech’s Innovation Campus Academic Building One. Universities\, as the cornerstone of communities\, provide unique opportunities to shift the workforce to enhance technology within a framework sustainability\, resiliency\, and equity. Academic Building One\, through its design process\, is a model for transforming and improving civic and community infrastructure. \n  \nJoin us for a presentation and discussion on how Virginia Tech’s Innovation Campus Academic Building 1 is integrating technology into the urban environment in support of and service to humanity. The panelists will offer insights into their work and attendees will be given an opportunity to participate in a live Q&A. \nPanelists:  \n\nSven Shockey\, AIA\, LEED BD+C\, Design Director\, SmithGroup\nJamison A Caldwell\, PE\, LEED SP\, Mechanical Engineer\, Principal\, SmithGroup\nLiza Morris\, RA\, NCARB\, Assistant Vice President for Planning and University Archtiect\, Virginia Tech\nRobert M. SUMMARY:Combining Design and Function in Today’s ADA Compliant Bathroom
DESCRIPTION:Offered and presented by Schluter Systems L.P. \nMandated requirements for ADA compliancy and demand from an aging population are creating a growing need for barrier-free bathrooms. Today’s ADA compliant bathroom no longer has to be utilitarian or “institutional” in its design. Design options are enhanced through the use of tile and innovative construction methods. The result is beautiful bathrooms that also adhere to ADA standards for accessible design. \nLearning Objectives\n– How barrier-free environments can be customized to include various design elements while remaining ADA compliant.\n– Why bonded waterproofing technology lends itself to the construction requirements of barrier-free design.\n– The principle of uncoupling\, its functions\, and history.\n– The evolution of tile setting techniques along with the benefits and limitations of each stage of development. \nPresented by Gustavo Tovar\, Schluter Systems L.P.\nArchitectural Manager\, Mid Atlantic \nSCHLUTER SYSTEMS L.P.\nProvider # : J360\nCourse: SCHL5A \nOrganized by AIA Northern Virginia \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:A Jewel in Appalachia
DESCRIPTION:Join AIA Richmond and AIA Northern Virginia for a jointly held virtual event on the award-winning short film “A Jewel in Appalachia” about the transformation of the Lawrence County Public Library. The film was awarded people’s choice in the 2022 AIA Look Up Film Challenge. You will hear directly from the projects architect and filmmakers from OPN Architects and Library Director Carlie Pelfrey about the importance of this transformative project to eastern Kentucky. \nLouisa is the small-county seat of 2\,327\, in Kentucky’s largest county. It’s a place of scarcity\, where the per capita income $12\,008 and 30% of the population lives below the poverty line. The original 1960s Lawrence County Public Library\, with limited windows and collection space\, high shelves\, hidden and inadequate seating and storage\, could not deliver on the library board and director’s promise to be a beacon for learning in a place where light can struggle to break through poverty’s pervasive darkness. They were committed to a process and a promise for a renovation that would create an epicenter for the county; embrace justice\, equity\, and care; address challenges head on; highlight access and opportunity; and most importantly celebrate the belief that a modern library can thrive anywhere. The renovated library\, which opened in February 2020\, manifests this mission. It is transparent\, accessible\, flexible\, easy to navigate\, promotes digital literacy\, and is welcoming and inclusive to all ages. The library is prideful without being ostentatious. It is now a place where a love for learning is on display\, showing residents that they deserve to aspire for better. The Lawrence County Public Library is an act of love. \nEarn 1 AIA LU \nRegister online.
