SUMMARY:Embodied Carbon 101: Process + Firm Culture
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to integrate sustainability work into your firm’s standard practices and procedures. \nIn order to make true progress toward carbon reduction\, carbon-thoughtful design must be part of the AEC industry’s standards and culture\, instead of approached on a project-by-project basis. Hear from sustainability leaders representing a range of practices\, including architecture\, engineering and consulting\, construction\, and design/build firms who share the vision and infrastructure of their own firms’ sustainability and embodied carbon practice\, and elaborate on how they arrived at a place where sustainable design and construction is built into their firms’ cultures. These leaders identify barriers to adopting carbon-thoughtful design and strategies for breaking down those barriers\, including leveraging existing cultural and industry structures (for example: the AIA 2030 Commitment) and strengthening the connections between the existing values of firm leadership (for example: operational energy reduction; for example: materials and occupant health) and carbon reduction. \nPresented by Virginia COTE with support from AIA Virginia’s Knowledge Community Grant program and the following sponsors: \nSILVER\nMafi \nBRONZE\nBamforth Engineers + Surveyors \nEarn 1.5 AIA LU|HSW \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:High Performing Resilient Wood Framed Roofs
DESCRIPTION:This course provides an overview and discussion of resilient construction methods related to roof construction. We start by defining resiliency as a design objective\, then investigate the financial ramifications of natural disasters on structures not designed with resiliency in mind. We describe numerous programs that promote resilient construction in the US\, including a program designed to provide insurance discounts to homeowners that build to resilient standards. Finally\, the program describes the construction techniques that qualify as resilient practices and provides a financial comparison of the costs of these practices. \nAs a result of participating in this presentation\, attendees will be equipped to: \n\nIdentify and recognize the natural environmental forces that affect the design considerations of wood-framed roof systems.\nAssess the advantages and disadvantages of resilient vs. non-resilient design.\nCompare and contrast the performance characteristics of the components of a wood-framed roof system.\nProvide best practice solutions for resilient design of wood-framed roofs.\n\nEarn 1.0 AIA LU | HSW \nRegister online. \nPresented in collaboration with Huber Engineered Woods.
