The project is pursuing LEED Platinum and is situated adjacent to the Arlington Virginia’s Courthouse Complex. It will be the tallest building in the area capturing sweeping views from downtown DC to the National Monument\, National Cathedral\, Tysons Corner\, Arlington Cemetery and the Pentagon via the occupied roof deck. This architect-led tour will do a deep-dive into how the building systems had to be designed and constructed to meet the challenges of the metro tunnels running directly underneath the development’s 3-story\, below-grade parking area and ground floor retail spaces. In addition\, they will experience how lower floors of residential buildings can be designed to provide over 33\,000 sf of amenity space for the residents including outdoor terraces and a pool. \nPPE will be required\, including: Hard hat\, sturdy boots\, safety vests and googles.\nTour Waiver Form is required for participation. \nParticipation is limited\, so reserve your space now!\nAIA NORTHERN VIRGINIA\nProvider Number: A058\nCourse: NOVA2023-007\nSession: 1

SUMMARY:Large Doors: How to Select the Right Door
DESCRIPTION:Offered and presented by T.W. Perry \n1 AIA LU|HSW.\nFree. Virtual. \nREGISTER >>> \nModern design trends are favoring larger openings\, and while this blank canvas offers the architect a wide-range of options\, it can also pose a challenge. Because of almost unlimited variations of different types\, styles\, and available options for large doors\, it is often more important that the architect understands how to make the selection process\, rather than which specific door to choose. The process for specifying should include client aesthetic expectations\, environmental conditions\, building performance\, and durability concerns. \nLearning Objectives:\nUnderstand the unique design elements of an indoor/outdoor living space and modern trends in large doors.\nDescribe what to consider when balancing client needs with environmental conditions\, building performance\, and durability concerns.\nList the different door types and styles available for transition points between indoor and outdoor areas.\nDiscuss the best process for specifying large doors in commercial and residential projects. \nContact:\nKen Clark\, T.W. One of the buildings forming part of the Thaden School\, an independent middle and high school in Bentonville\, Arkansas\, the building is a critical component of the school’s innovative curriculum and master plan\, which shaped its overall campus. The Reels Building is an integral part of a larger site and building ecosystem that addresses local ecology\, water\, and energy use. “The down-to-earth building utilizes a traditional layout while playing with light and views. The siting is beautiful.” – Jury comment\, AIA 2022 Education Facility Design Awards\, Merit recipient. \nTo participate\, contact Chair Zaira Suarez\, AIA\, at cae@aianova.org.
