SUMMARY:CAE: Industry & Academia: Re-imagining Spaces for Hands-On Learning
DESCRIPTION:The number of students enrolling for undergraduate programs in the U.S. is undergoing a historic decline. Alternatively\, students are pursuing technical careers and preparing to join the work force after graduation. Join us as we learn more about the factors influencing this trend\, and how school systems\, educators\, and architects are working together to provide dynamic CTE facilities for our communities. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES\n1. Discuss the current trend in graduating high school students joining the work force versus pursuing higher education\, and what is influencing these changes.\n2. Recognize alternate paths available to students and how potential employers are procuring talent.\n3. Identify the role architects have in the development of educational facilities for students interested alternated paths and the different stakeholders involved.\n4. Explore different CTE curriculum project case studies that successfully meet the needs of local communities. \nAIA NORTHERN VIRGINIA\nProvider Number: A058\nCourse: NOVA2022-012\, Session: 1 \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:NOVA Monthly CAE Firm Spotlight & Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join the Committee on Architecture for Education for our monthly committee meeting and November “Firm Spotlight.” Josh Matthews\, project architect at Marlon Blackwell Architects\, will be presenting the Reels Building. One of the buildings forming part of the Thaden School\, an independent middle and high school in Bentonville\, Arkansas\, the building is a critical component of the school’s innovative curriculum and master plan\, which shaped its overall campus. The Reels Building is an integral part of a larger site and building ecosystem that addresses local ecology\, water\, and energy use. “The down-to-earth building utilizes a traditional layout while playing with light and views. The siting is beautiful.” – Jury comment\, AIA 2022 Education Facility Design Awards\, Merit recipient. \nTo participate\, contact Chair Zaira Suarez\, AIA\, at cae@aianova.org.

SUMMARY:High Performing Resilient Wood Framed Roofs
DESCRIPTION:This course provides an overview and discussion of resilient construction methods related to roof construction. We start by defining resiliency as a design objective\, then investigate the financial ramifications of natural disasters on structures not designed with resiliency in mind. We describe numerous programs that promote resilient construction in the US\, including a program designed to provide insurance discounts to homeowners that build to resilient standards. Finally\, the program describes the construction techniques that qualify as resilient practices and provides a financial comparison of the costs of these practices. \nAs a result of participating in this presentation\, attendees will be equipped to: \n\nIdentify and recognize the natural environmental forces that affect the design considerations of wood-framed roof systems.\nAssess the advantages and disadvantages of resilient vs. non-resilient design.\nCompare and contrast the performance characteristics of the components of a wood-framed roof system.\nProvide best practice solutions for resilient design of wood-framed roofs.\n\nEarn 1.0 AIA LU | HSW \nRegister online. \nPresented in collaboration with Huber Engineered Woods.

SUMMARY:Embodied Carbon and Adaptive Use
DESCRIPTION:In a continuation of COTE’s Embodied Carbon 101 series\, Virginia’s Historic Resources Committee presents “Embodied Carbon and Adaptive Use.” \nExisting buildings represent significant investments in energy and resources\, so it stands to reason that one of the best ways of reducing embodied carbon is to adapt and reuse them. SUMMARY:Embodied Carbon 101: Process + Firm Culture
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to integrate sustainability work into your firm’s standard practices and procedures. \nIn order to make true progress toward carbon reduction\, carbon-thoughtful design must be part of the AEC industry’s standards and culture\, instead of approached on a project-by-project basis. Hear from sustainability leaders representing a range of practices\, including architecture\, engineering and consulting\, construction\, and design/build firms who share the vision and infrastructure of their own firms’ sustainability and embodied carbon practice\, and elaborate on how they arrived at a place where sustainable design and construction is built into their firms’ cultures. These leaders identify barriers to adopting carbon-thoughtful design and strategies for breaking down those barriers\, including leveraging existing cultural and industry structures (for example: the AIA 2030 Commitment) and strengthening the connections between the existing values of firm leadership (for example: operational energy reduction; for example: materials and occupant health) and carbon reduction. \nPresented by Virginia COTE with support from AIA Virginia’s Knowledge Community Grant program and the following sponsors: \nSILVER\nMafi \nBRONZE\nBamforth Engineers + Surveyors \nEarn 1.5 AIA LU|HSW \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Embodied Carbon 101: Making the Case
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to speak with clients and collaborators about embodied carbon to demonstrate the value of and pathways to reducing its impacts. \nAddressing embodied carbon in one’s practice requires strategy\, communication\, and collaboration. This course addresses how AEC practitioners can speak with clients and collaborators about embodied carbon to demonstrate the value of reducing embodied carbon and to provide pathways to reduce its impacts in projects and the environment. Learners will hear from sustainability professionals whose practices represent traditional architectural firms\, large engineering and consulting firms\, and small design/build practices who share approaches to reducing embodied carbon in cooperation with clients\, including: managing client choices by selecting and presenting low embodied carbon materials and designs; marketing and external communications; making the economic case for use of low embodied carbon materials and designs; drawing parallels between embodied carbon and materials and occupant health; and developing mutual goals and values with clients and project teams from the early stages of a project. \nPresented by Virginia COTE with support from AIA Virginia’s Knowledge Community Grant program and the following sponsors: \nSILVER\nMafi \nBRONZE\nBamforth Engineers + Surveyors \nEarn 1.5 AIA LU|HSW \nRegister online.
