“Silo City: From Ruins to City” Screening and Panel Discussion
April 7, 2021 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
FreeJoin AIA Richmond and AIA Northern Virginia for a jointly held virtual event on the award-winning short film “Silo City.” The film was awarded second place in the 2020 AIA Film Challenge.
Hear directly from architects Studio V Architecture and film-maker Jake Catalanotto about the importance of this transformative project to the city of Buffalo. “The Buffalo grain elevators at Silo City once fueled the growth of the city – but now they are abandoned. This site can be a hub for the cultural and economic resurgence of Buffalo, a place of connection for the communities it once failed, and an experiment in creating a sustainable American city.”
The story of the creation and development of this project is a compelling example of the power of design to bring about positive change in communities. Storytelling has always been integral to the work of architects in community-based projects and the medium of film-making is expanding this tool and the ability to connect with wider audiences through social media and other forms of digital outreach. Programs like the AIA Film Challenge continue to encourage architects, film-makers, and their clients to capture unique stories to share with others through the creative medium of film-making.
