Throughout the month of March, WIA will recognize 30 amazing women within architecture and the allied fields on our social media platforms, highlighting the incredible work and dedication of women throughout the DMV and beyond. Tell us about a woman who inspires you!

Nominate any woman within the design, architecture, and allied professions. Nominations are not limited to women within the DMV. Following your nomination, we’ll ask you to help us work with the nominee to produce a brief bio, headshot, and project photo to include in each social media posting.

ARE Prep®: Practice Management (PcM) (CE)

This year’s classes will be held both virtually and in-person. Advance registration is required by 5:00pm on the Thursday directly prior to the class.

Each class offers attendees an opportunity to learn from top-notch design professionals while gaining knowledge that can be used to prepare for each section of the Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®). Topics covered include Practice ManagementProject ManagementProgramming + AnalysisProject Planning and DesignProject Development + Documentation; and Construction and Evaluation. All sessions offer AIA LU|HSW credits.

In-person classes will be held at CannonDesign, 1560 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, VA, (map) with limited seating. Lunch will be provided.

Virtual class participation link will be sent the day immediately prior to each class.

Individual Seminar Classes: $50 (AIA Member); $75 (Non-Member)

Individual Seminar classes are available but advance registration is required by 5:00pm on the Thursday directly prior to the seminar.

Seminar Class Bundles: Attendees choosing the series package are permitted one session cancellation, minus credit card fees and cost of in-person lunch, as applicable. Additional missed sessions will not be refunded, but will entitle attendees to receive any pre-/post-session class materials which the instructors may decide to make available.

Cancellation requests must be received by email (via aianova@aianova.org) no later than 5:00pm on the Wednesday immediately prior to the class, and the refund will be minus credit card fees and cost of in-person lunch, as applicable. Missed sessions will not be refunded but will entitle attendees to receive any pre- /post-session class materials which the instructors may decide to make available. Class materials from any refunded session will not be provided.

WIA Construction Tour: The Commodore

Participants will tour The Commodore, a 20-story, 423-unit apartment building that is primarily new construction yet also incorporates facades of two historically important buildings. The project is pursuing LEED Platinum and is situated adjacent to the Arlington Virginia’s Courthouse Complex. It will be the tallest building in the area capturing sweeping views from downtown DC to the National Monument, National Cathedral, Tysons Corner, Arlington Cemetery and the Pentagon via the occupied roof deck. This architect-led tour will do a deep-dive into how the building systems had to be designed and constructed to meet the challenges of the metro tunnels running directly underneath the development’s 3-story, below-grade parking area and ground floor retail spaces. In addition, they will experience how lower floors of residential buildings can be designed to provide over 33,000 sf of amenity space for the residents including outdoor terraces and a pool.

PPE will be required, including: Hard hat, sturdy boots, safety vests and googles.
