Interschool Design Competition

Organized by AIA Northern Virginia, AIA Potomac Valley, and AIA DC.

This year’s ISDC will take place at Catholic University.

For more than two decades, the three Washington area chapters of the American Institute of Architects have collaborated to organize the annual Interschool Student Design Competition. These competitions have helped open doors for students to the various local architectural curriculums and the architectural profession.

The Whole Child: Policy, Program, and the Built Environment for Healthy Schools

There are many developmental facets that contribute to the overall wellness of a child, everything from a nutritious diet, physical activity, and access to nature. The policies, research, and grants that make these accessible for all schools are paramount within the educational ecosystem.

This session will begin with an abbreviated viewing of the video, “The Whole Child: Health and Wellness,” followed by a curated panel discussing progress on various fronts. Panelists will discuss wellness rated topics from architect-led research collaborations with public health and childhood obesity researchers, to implementation of the WELL Health-Safety Rating to bring back in-person learning with confidence. The culmination of research and successful public-private collaborations is in the synthesis of an exciting school building that will uniquely serve the students and community. 

The panelists will offer insights into their work and attendees will be given an opportunity to participate in a live Q&A.

AIA Northern Virginia 2021 Design Awards

The AIA Northern Virginia Design Awards will once again be presented virtually in 2021. Celebrate the tremendous designs by architects in the region and the winning projects in a virtual awards presentation on August 19 at 7:00p on the chapter’s YouTube channel. All the award submissions from this year are a wonderful representation of the skill and talent of our members and will be released by category one week in advance of the awards on August 12 at 7 p.m.

The jury, from AIA Kansas City, will be working diligently on July 23 to review the broad array of submissions and select Awards of Excellence, Awards of Merit, and Jurors’ Citations.

There will be no registration or fee for the virtual awards celebration.
