WIA Workshop: Difficult Conversations, Negotiations, and Disagreements

This is the third and final workshop of WIA’s 2021 Communication Workshop Series.

On a good day, people struggle with conversations and communication that bear weight, heightened emotions, and conflict. Add in a high-value want, something like a raise or a better work situation, and negotiations can make conversations even more difficult – try a disagreement? Cue stress, people-pleasing, passive-aggression, and more bad behavior that helps no one.

Join us for an interactive workshop to flex small talk and conversation skills with Jen Brown, founder of The Engaging Educator.

Building Better Futures in Native American Communities

The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and Bureau of Indian Education (BIE), departments of the U.S. Department of the Interior provide oversight of the planning, design and construction of educational facilities on Native American reservations across the United States.  The BIA utilizes the BIA School Facilities Design and Space Guidelines as a template for the planning and design of reservation schools.  The Design and Space Guidelines were developed collaboratively by the BIA and MOA Architecture of Denver, CO.  At the time of the development of the guidelines, MOA Architecture was a Native American owned architectural firm.

During this program, MOA Principal and Educational Planner Jack Mousseau will discuss typical conditions and inequities encountered in reservation schools prior to renovation or replacement.  He will then address the reasons for the development and intent of the BIA School Facilities Design and Space Guidelines, providing a brief overview of the documents.  We will then review how the guidelines function and the processes involved in the development of reservation schools.  Mr. Mousseau will share the design outcome of several BIA schools resulting from the guidelines as an illustration of their performance.

Presented by Jack Mousseau, AIA, A4LE, LEED AP, Principal, Educational Planner from MOA ARCHITECTURE. Webinar organized by the AIA Northern Virginia Committee on Architecture for Education and AIA Virginia.

After attending this program, participants will be able to:

1. Discuss the typical conditions encountered on Native American reservation educational facilities.
2. Describe the development and intent of the BIA School Facilities Design and Space Guidelines.
3. Explain the process for utilization of the BIA School Facilities Design and Space Guidelines.
4. Illustrate the appropriate use of the guidelines and discuss examples of their successful implementation.

Equity in This Moment: Becoming an Ally

Equity is at the forefront of our national narrative. We look at equity within the field of architecture with questions that relate to pay and hiring, but also as an opportunity.

With that in mind and to support our commitment to equity, health, and wellbeing, we will host a virtual session providing an opportunity to learn about identity-based inequities, to discuss their impacts, and to explore what we each can do to combat oppression and injustice.

This is a 90-minute interactive session that will take a deep dive into equity issues. Attendees will gain greater understanding of, and tools to address, these issues. The session will include an overview, whole group reflections, breakout sessions, and a closing dialog.

Designing for Fire Safety

When considering the building enclosure, fire safety is an important design factor and needs to be considered hand-in hand with energy code requirements. The NFPA 285 “Standard Fire Test Method for Evaluation of Fire Propagation Characteristics of Exterior Non-Load-Bearing Wall Assemblies Containing Combustible Components” is a common consideration with modern building assemblies that use combustible materials. This presentation will review the history and scope of the NFPA 285 test standard, and its adoption within the International Building Code (IBC). It will outline the criteria for compliance, as well as identify triggers and contributors under the standard. The presentation will review how the selection building components such as insulation, air/water resistive barriers and claddings, can affect the fire performance of an assembly and identify solutions and common paths for compliance.
